CCN Health Launches Contactless Fall Detection
LOS ANGELES, CA — November 13, 2024 — CCN Health today announced the launch of contactless fall detection for senior living facilities. Built on the same 60GHz radar technology used in CCN Health's contactless vital sign monitoring, the fall detection capability identifies fall events in real time and alerts nursing staff immediately, without requiring residents to wear pendants, wristbands, or any other devices.
Radar-Based Fall Detection
The fall detection system uses millimeter-wave radar sensors already installed in resident rooms as part of CCN Health's contactless monitoring platform. The sensors continuously track body position and movement in three-dimensional space, analyzing motion patterns to distinguish falls from normal activities such as sitting down, bending, or lying in bed.
When the system detects a fall signature — a rapid vertical displacement followed by a sustained low-position presence — it generates an immediate alert to the facility's nursing team. The alert includes the resident's room number, the time of the event, and the current status of the resident, enabling rapid response regardless of whether the resident is able to activate a call button.
Reducing Unwitnessed Falls
Unwitnessed falls represent a significant clinical and operational challenge in senior living. A resident who falls in their room during overnight hours may remain on the floor for an extended period if they cannot reach a call device or if their fall is not detected by routine rounding. Prolonged time on the floor is associated with worse clinical outcomes, including hypothermia, dehydration, rhabdomyolysis, and increased fear of falling that can lead to reduced mobility.
Contactless fall detection addresses this gap by providing continuous monitoring coverage that does not depend on the resident's ability to self-report. The radar sensor operates around the clock, ensuring that falls are detected during overnight hours, in bathrooms, and in any situation where the resident cannot activate a traditional alert device.
Integration with Contactless Monitoring
Fall detection operates as an integrated layer within CCN Health's existing contactless monitoring platform. Facilities that have already deployed Xandar Kardian sensors for vital sign monitoring gain fall detection as an additional capability on the same hardware. Fall events are logged in the same clinical dashboard used for vital sign monitoring, providing a complete picture of each resident's safety and health status.
"Falls are the leading cause of injury in senior living, and the majority of fall detection systems still rely on the resident to do something — wear a device, press a button, call for help," said Cosmo Cochrane, Co-Founder of CCN Health. "Contactless fall detection removes the resident from the equation entirely. The technology detects the fall and alerts the team automatically."
Availability
Contactless fall detection is available now to CCN Health partners with Xandar Kardian sensors deployed. Facilities without existing contactless monitoring infrastructure can deploy both capabilities simultaneously through CCN Health's standard implementation process.
